Where does your state rank in education?

Recently there have been additional state rankings of education.  As far as math and science education Massachusetts ranks #1.  California ranks below average but misses the far below average category.  Massachusetts uses the MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) to evaluate students at each grade level.  Go to http://www.JogNog.com to find grade level MCAS study games for FREE to see how your student stacks up against Massachusetts.  Once registered type in MCAS in the search field for study games grade 3-12.

"According to a statement last week, Cottle said that although the SERI scores do not compare states to schools' performances in other countries, even the American leader -- Massachusetts -- would struggle to compete with countries like China or Singapore.  For years, the U.S. has lagged behind other countries in math and science. A 2009 study showed that American students ranked 25th among 34 countries, behind nations like China, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Finland."  Source note below

  1. By what criteria are these states being ranked? And how do these rankings correlate to 1) per-pupil spending 2) percentage of English-language learners in the public school system and 3) average educational attainment of adults in the state. In addition to which, the LA Unified School District has more students than some of these states. A ranked list with no context leaves out a lot of information.

    1. Hi Dashka,
Yes we are all extremely frustrated with the current state of education no matter in which state you live! I've had many parents come to me directly and say that it's better if they don't know how bad things are. My hope is to raise awareness and empower parents with information that helps change students lives.

Other parents have said that if they were below average at work they would be fired and yet their tax dollars support systems that result in below average education where only 35% of CA high school grads are eligible to apply to University of California or California State University systems.

The good questions you ask go to the issues of causation. There are other studies that have been done to address those issues, attempting to repair the system.

This study used SERI as their criteria and we can all argue about where any particular state should really be ranked but the results are what cannot be argued. In California only an average of 35% are eligible to apply to the state funded higher education that was designed to provide access for all in an inexpensive venue.

At the Silicon Valley Educational Foundation many are working hard to improve STEM standards as we move toward a unifying set of common standards for the entire USA. Improvements are coming but parents must take an active role in their child's education. There are tools available to help parents in all states. I've mentioned only one that helps students understand if they meet Massachusetts standards. I encourage us all to be well informed.

      Thank you for your comment!

      Irene

  2. My teachers always treat the smart kids better. She jokes with them, lets them off the hook for not finishing homework etc. Some of us aren't fast learners or sometimes we just aren't good in the subject. It's unfair how the smarter kids and more popular kids get treated better. And the rest of us don't misbehave either.

  3. All the education ranking websites that rank what states in America have best and worst education, including one I saw on foxnews, shows that the top ten states in education voted Democrat in last election while 9 of the ten states with worst ranked education voted Republican. Assuming the level of education relates to the intelligence of the state, why do all the smart states vote Democrat?
To some of the responses, Michigan and California were not on the foxnews list that I was talking about in top ten of education. Most of those top states also have highest percentage of students going on to get a college degree and those states have higher median income, which is a much better indicator of economics than whether the budget's in a surplus or deficit. I know that there's no law that says that people have to stay in their home state, but most people do end up living in the state in which they were grown up, so it does apply.
